“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” -Proverbs 15:1 People usually tell me that the wisdom found in the book of Proverbs are found in mere common sense. Are they really? How many people do you find quarreling with each other every day: Drivers on the road, aunties scolding the staff at restaurants; how about husband and wife arguing or business associates raising their voices at each other? The result? More stress, more broken relationships, more enemies, more time and money lost, and a lot more.
The book that contains the wisdom of God instructs us to defuse the anger situation before it turns to fire. When it turns to fire, you’ll be spending a lot more time and energy trying to win the fight or trying to repair what you had in the first place, your peace. How much will it cost you to throw out a kind or gentle word? Try it out and see that you will get more than just your peace.
God’s ways are not the ways of threat and intimidation. When we sinned against Him, instead of frying us righteously by fire, He sent His only Son to save us. God’s ways are born out of love and graciousness; and the result – we end up loving Him more and more.
