EL ROI: The God Who Sees Me

Some people, because of their daily challenges, begin to lose hope and say in their hearts: “God has forgotten me” or “God has abandoned me.”  We say this in ourselves when we are attacked by negative thoughts and when we are bogged down by the challenges of this life.  Well, as I always love to do when dealing with the stresses of life, the best thing we can do is dig in to God’s word and discover more revelations about our Creator.  Does God really forget about us?

A name that was revealed about God in Genesis 16:13-14 is EL ROI; which is literally translated from Hebrew as: “The God Who Sees Me.”  This name was revealed to Hagar, the slave of Abraham, after running away from her master and mistress.  She thought she was all alone and abandoned; little did she know that God was with her throughout her ordeal.  The name pertains to The LORD’s omniscient nature, He sees everything and He knows everything.

“I have now seen the One who sees me.” –Genesis 16:13

The author of Hebrew (who I suspect is Paul) had the same revelation of EL ROI declaring: “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable” (Hebrews 4:13, NLT).  Solomon, in all his wisdom also knows: “The LORD is everywhere…” (Proverbs 15:3, NLT).  I particularly love what the psalmist wrote for the ones who doubt God’s ever watchful eyes on them:

He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? He that formed the eye, shall he not see? –Psalm 94:9

My friend, whether you’re a master (Solomon) or a slave (Hagar), whether you are rich or poor, man or woman, no matter who you are, THE LORD SEES YOU and He is there watching over you, taking care of your every footstep so that not one stone stumbles you.

Can a mother forget the baby at her breast 

and have no compassion on the child she has borne?

Though she may forget,

I will not forget you! –Isaiah 49:15, NIV

See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; 

your walls are ever before me. –Isaiah 49:16, NIV
